The B-Team
Our Magisters
Doug & Emmanuelle Schuler
Hey there, Brownies! We are the Schulers: Doug, Emmanuelle, and Estelle – all at Brown, plus our son, Mael (away at Trinity University in San Antonio), and Doug’s two older sons: Noah and Wiley (working in San Diego and Austin respectively). It’s awesome to meet you all!
Let’s introduce ourselves! Doug is a professor of business and public policy at Rice’s Jones School of Business. His research focuses on how companies get involved in politics, corporate social responsibility, and corporate activism. He also teaches MBA courses on CSR and business-government relations, plus an undergraduate course called Innovation for Social Impact. When Doug’s not busy with academics, he enjoys sports like cycling, soccer, and, of course, Brown softball (we are the IM college champs!). Plus, he’s a devoted dog walker!
Emmanuelle is a biotech consultant. With a background in chemistry, Emmanuelle did her undergraduate studies at Université du Québec à Montréal and her PhD at McGill University. She is an executive MBA graduate from Rice (‘14). It’s also incredible that before that she had the opportunity to work with Dr. Rick Smalley, one of Rice’s Nobel Laureates, bringing her to Houston in 2002. In her free time, she likes going to the gym, experimenting with different cuisines, and watching Instagram. Doug and Emmanuelle first met on campus in 2002 and that’s one of the reasons Rice is so special to us.
Estelle is a Junior at the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She loves dancing and excels in contemporary, modern, ballet, and jazz. Estelle is a fan of Lana Del Rey, enjoys making TikToks, laughing, driving the family’s “hand-me-down” Honda Fit, and of course, hanging out with her friends.
And let’s not forget our two dogs, Adoni and Onyx. Adoni is mellow and friendly and brings so much warmth to our home. Onyx, on the other hand, is more energetic and tends to bark when she doesn’t know you, but you’ll discover she’s just as lovable and cuddly.
We’re really looking forward to getting to know all of you! If you have any questions or need assistance with anything related to college life, feel free to ask. Together with the rest of the B-Team, we’re here to help you make the most of your Brown College experience!
OUR RAs
Chris, Jaime, Eleanor, and Mae Mize
We are Chris and Jaime Mize, your Tower RA’s! I (Jaime) am originally from Plano, Texas and went to Texas A&M University for a degree in Economics. I am a Product Manager at a Benefits Administration Company (riveting, I know) and work directly with our lead developers to document all requirements and expectations for each feature they build. I consume more podcasts than anyone you will ever meet, listen to exclusively sad music, and love sunshine!
I (Chris) grew up in Houston and went to the University of Houston for a degree in Biology. I am the Radiation Safety Officer in the Environmental Health and Safety Department at Rice and have been here for 10 years. I am happiest when I am in a Goodwill digging through piles of old t-shirts. I love watching trashy tv shows and chatting about them. We are so excited to have you at Brown!
We have two children, Mae and Eleanor. Mae is 8 years old and loves all things history! Her favorite movie changes by the day, but her excitement for movie night never ceases. Her favorite foods are pickles and olives, so come prepared if you want to get on her good side. Only kidding…kind of. Eleanor is 7 years old and, unlike Mae, wants nothing to do with history. She loves listening to Taylor Swift and climbing up trees. She loves to eat anything that is spicy and tangy! She is immediate friends with everyone she meets, and will most likely ask what your name is 300 times. She can catch a ball better than most adults, yet somehow falls out of her chair almost nightly during dinner.
We also have a 1 year old cat, Midnight. He loves to snuggle and explore the outdoors!
Jess and Houston Krom
Hey Brown!
My name is Jess Krom, and I am going into my third year as an RA at Brown College. My son, Houston, and I, absolutely love being a part of the Brown College community because Brown is Sweet!
I grew up in the Houston area (Pearland – Go Oilers!), and after many years away from Texas, it has been so nice to be back home and at Rice, where the weather is warmer, the tea is sweeter, and everything is bigger.
I absolutely love people. My family says that I have never met a stranger, and I have to say it is true. I’ve spent my entire career in higher education and I’ve spent over 10 years now supporting both undergraduate and graduate students. After graduating from Baylor University (Sic ‘Em Bears) with a BS in Education, I moved to Bangkok, Thailand, and taught overseas as a first-grade teacher. I was a teacher at the Royal Palace School and have a few good stories about my time at the palace. I spent time as the Associate Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Cornell University, and before that, I supported diversity recruiting at Baylor University. When I started as an RA, I was the Associate Director of MBA Admissions at Rice Business. In that role, I lead the Admissions process for all Residential MBA programs. I recently accepted a new position and was promoted to the Senior Director of Staff Administration for Rice Business, which is a MAJOR shift, that has been a welcomed change. I have made my career out of what I love, helping students and supporting people - I feel incredibly blessed to do the work I do. As the RA adventure continues, I’m most excited to get to know all of our new students and continue to make great memories with our Brownies! I love reading, doing Thresher Crossword puzzles despite being terrible at them, I’m a bit of a wine snob, I am obsessed with Abbott Elementary, candles, Thanksgiving, Harry Potter, and Brunch! What brings my heart joy is a glass of wine and making people laugh.
My absolute favorite human is Houston. Houston is my son (Yes, I’m that person who named my kid after the city). Houston has basically grown up at Brown; he has lived here since he was 18 months old! You will hear him before you see him because he is LOUD, just like his mama. Houston loves Monster Trucks, Dinosaurs, First Responders, Ninja Turtles, Disney Plus, building things, hanging out with students in the Commons and Vator, Christmas, and BEER BIKE. It’s WILD having a 4-year-old that yells Beer Bike every chance he gets, but I think it’s cute and will make for one hell of a college essay.
Houston and I are so blessed to call Brown College home. We look forward to all of the great things to come and doing life alongside you!
OUR College Coordinator
Christy Cousins
My name is Christy Cousins and I am the Brown college coordinator. You can call me Christy or cc (Christy Cousins, college coordinator, cc, you get it). I am a Rice grad with degrees in Materials Science & Engineering and French Studies who grew up moving all over the world and ended up settling in Texas, yeehaw!
My husband, Craig, is also a Rice grad and we first met in the Wiess Acabowl. He is a Senior Business Value Manager with Okta and I like to say his job is kinda like the one Chandler has on "Friends" because none of us really knows what he does. He can fix anything in our house, likes playing video games, and shopping at Costco. Emily, my oldest daughter, lives in New Haven, CT with her partner, Matthew, a world class professional tenor. She is a journalist for a law news publication and sings professionally for a church every Sunday. She embroiders (some of her work is in my office), knits, and plays all the electronic versions of Pokemon. Charlotte is a junior studying Business Analytics at Miami U in Ohio with a love for fashion, Twilight, Zelda, and baking (especially macarons). Sam is a sophomore in high school He's joining the football team this year and performs with his tenor sax in band and jazz band. He plays Madden and NBA 2K like they are his job.
We have three cats: Zelda, Binx, and Sushi who enjoy playing with bugs, sleeping, and scratching anything other than their scratching posts. We also have a dog, Timmy, who tries to bother the cats - one ignores him, one hides, and the smallest one whacks him across the nose.
I LOVE to travel and explore new places while photographing the journey. I spend my spare time reading, love to cook and bake, sing in church choir, and enjoy excellent costuming, especially in movies. We have a family tradition of making our own Halloween costumes every year.
Come on by and say hi when you pick up your packages and get your mail, have some candy or homemade cookies, and ask any questions you may have. I can't wait to meet you all and be part of your incredible Rice experience.
